Microsoft recently announced that it will work with Andhra Pradesh Government to provide low Cost Internet to the Users. microsoft termed this project as 'the pilot project' first of it's kind in india. 

The project consist of TV White Spaces technology. This technology uses unused TV spectrum to deliver internet connectivity to the users. The project was approved after a discussion between Anil Bhansali, R&D Managing Director Microsoft India, Prashant Shukla, National Technology Officer, and other executives along with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu at Vijayawada on Friday. The Chief Minsiter said, “I have always experimented with technology to take the services and welfare programmes to people. With this pilot project, Microsoft has shown that innovation and technology can make a society technologically advanced.”

microsoft, DOT, ERNET, and DEITY are working together on the project pilot to provide low cost internet to educational institutes in Srikakulam a district of andhra pradesh.

One of the main advantages of this technology is that it has a range of atleast 10KM as compared to 100m range of wifi.  Microsoft has also agreed to provide a cloud-based machine learning solution for schools which will help the government to assess and reduce school drop out rates. 

Microsoft also said that before india they had implemented this Pilot project in Namibia, Tanzania, Singapore, Kenya, South Africa, Botswana, and Ghana.
